Preview
The Philadelphia Phillies make the trip up the turnpike to Citi Field on Friday, September 18, 2026, for a 7:15 PM ET showdown against the New York Mets. New York will send right-handed pitcher Zac Thornton to the mound, while Philadelphia has yet to announce a starter. The game is available on Apple TV nationally, with local radio coverage on 94 WIP for Phillies fans. Any time these two NL East rivals square off in the final weeks of the regular season, the stakes are real — this one is no different.
Phillies vs. Mets Pitching Matchup at Citi Field
The biggest question mark heading into Friday night is on the Philadelphia side: the Phillies have not yet announced a probable starter. That kind of uncertainty late in the season can be a strategic move — a bullpen game, a spot start, or a last-minute decision — but it puts added pressure on the offense to carry early innings if the starter is stretched thin from the jump.
On the Mets' side, Zac Thornton gets the ball. Detailed ERA and win-loss numbers for Thornton are not yet available heading into this matchup, so the Phillies will need to do their homework in real time. Unknown arms can cut both ways — Philly's lineup is built to make adjustments, but there's always early-inning danger when you haven't seen a pitcher recently.

Keys to Watch for the Phillies
- Bryce Harper hitting third: Harper in the three-hole means the Phillies need Schwarber and Turner on base ahead of him. If those two can work counts and get on, Harper has the protection of Arraez behind him — a tough lineup construction for any pitcher to navigate.
- Luis Arraez at cleanup: Slotting Arraez fourth is an unconventional but intriguing choice. He brings consistent contact to a spot that typically demands power, but his ability to put the ball in play could pay dividends if the bases are occupied.
- Facing the top of New York's order: Lindor and Soto at the top of the Mets lineup is as dangerous a 1-2 punch as you'll see in the National League. Philadelphia's unnamed starter — or relievers in a bullpen game — cannot fall behind those two early. Free passes to either will come back to hurt.
- J.T. Realmuto hitting eighth: Realmuto down in the order gives the Phillies a legitimate offensive threat before the lineup turns over. If he can get on base ahead of Hill and cycle back to Schwarber, Philadelphia has the depth to put up crooked numbers.
Prediction
The Phillies carry a lineup that can do damage against any pitcher, known commodity or not. The unannounced starter on the Philadelphia side is the wild card — if it turns into a bullpen game, the Phillies need a quick lead to work with. Expect a competitive, tight game between two NL East clubs who know each other well. Give the edge to Philadelphia's offense to find enough against the unfamiliar Thornton: Phillies 5, Mets 3.
