Phillies at Cardinals: Wednesday, August 12, 2026 — Pitching Matchup
Wheeler on the mound is always an event. The veteran right-hander is one of the most reliable arms in the National League, and when he is on, he can carry a ballgame by himself. He commands four pitches, generates elite swing-and-miss rates on his fastball and slider, and competes as hard in a day game on the road as he does in any other setting. The Cardinals will need their lineup dialed in to do damage against him.
For St. Louis, Kyle Leahy draws the start. Leahy is a younger arm for the Cardinals, and the Phillies offense will look to test him early, work counts, and get into the bullpen if the opportunity presents itself. Philadelphia's lineup is built to grind at-bats, and a starter they haven't seen frequently is not necessarily an advantage for the pitcher.
St. Louis Cardinals Lineup to Watch
The Cardinals are sending out a lineup with some intriguing pieces. JJ Wetherholt leads off at second base, with Iván Herrera hitting second as the designated hitter. Alec Burleson slots in third at first base, and Jordan Walker hits cleanup in right field. Nathan Church handles center field in the five hole, with Masyn Winn at shortstop batting sixth. César Prieto at third base, José Fermín in left, and Jimmy Crooks behind the plate round out the order.
Walker and Winn are the names Wheeler will want to be most careful with in the middle of that lineup. Winn in particular is a contact-oriented hitter who can put the ball in play and manufacture trouble on the bases.
Keys to the Game
- Wheeler's efficiency: If Wheeler can work deep into the game and keep his pitch count manageable through the first three innings, the Phillies bullpen gets a breather and the offense has time to get comfortable against Leahy.
- Early pressure on Leahy: Philadelphia needs to be aggressive in the first two innings. Getting Leahy's pitch count up early forces St. Louis to go to a Cardinals bullpen that the Phillies can exploit.
- Silencing the Cardinals' middle of the order: Burleson, Walker, and Church in the three-through-five spots represent the Cardinals' best opportunity to do damage. Wheeler's ability to limit traffic in front of the cleanup spot will be the defining factor.
- Road discipline: Day games on the road can be tricky. The Phillies need sharp at-bats from the top of the order to set the tone early at Busch Stadium.
Prediction
Wheeler is the best pitcher on the field Wednesday, and that matters. He has the stuff and the track record to keep a Cardinals lineup in check for six-plus innings. As long as Philadelphia does enough offensively against Leahy to give Wheeler a lead to work with, this game sets up well for the Phillies. Call it a 4-2 Philadelphia win behind a strong Wheeler outing.
